Oct 24As a Calexico native, Guillermina Gina Nuñez-Mchiri, dean of SDSU Imperial Valley, aspired to obtain a doctorate degree from a very young age. Her parents were migrant workers in California’s agriculture industry. Growing up, her family moved up and down the state for work. The constant movement became second nature and she devoted herself to school and her studies — a welcome respite with each relocation.

Oct 10Inspired by his own culture and upbringing, Juan Carlos Ramirez-Pimienta, Spanish professor at SDSU Imperial Valley, has been recognized as a leading expert in the culture of narcocorridos, U.S.- Mexico border literacy and the impact of Mexican regional music. Ramirez-Pimienta has authored the books, “De El Periquillo al pericazo: ensayos sobre literatura y cultura mexicana” (2006); “Cantar a los narcos: voces y versos del narcocorrido” (2011) and “Una historia temprana del crimen organizado en los corridos de Ciudad Juárez” (2021).
More Than 1,000 Turn Out for Mariachi Sin Fronteras Festival at SDSU Imperial Valley
Sep 26On Saturday, Sept. 16, SDSU Imperial Valley, the Calexico Rotary Club and the Consulate of Mexico in Calexico partnered together to host its first Mariachi sin Fronteras festival in celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day. All proceeds from the event will fund scholarships for SDSU Imperial Valley and local high school students to continue their higher education journeys.
