Salvador Espinosa's co-authored book shares strategies for national and subnational government agencies to access capital markets.

The Research, Innovation, Student and Engagement (RISE) Center of SDSU Imperial Valley launched in August 2023 its Imperial County Health Professions Pathway Program, an initiative designed to mentor Imperial County high school students interested in careers in health care.

Six San Diego State University professors won awards for their global research and cross-border education work as part of the university’s celebration of International Education Week Nov. 13-17.

During an event at SDSU Imperial Valley on Nov. 6, Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia presented a check in support of the project for more than $11.6 million to SDSU President Adela de la Torre, SDSU Imperial Valley Dean Gina G. Núñez-Mchiri, Superintendent/President for Imperial Community College District Lennor Johnson and IVC Board Clerk Isabel Solis representing the IVC Board of Trustees.

As a Calexico native, Guillermina Gina Nuñez-Mchiri, dean of SDSU Imperial Valley, aspired to obtain a doctorate degree from a very young age. Her parents were migrant workers in California’s agriculture industry. Growing up, her family moved up and down the state for work. The constant movement became second nature and she devoted herself to school and her studies — a welcome respite with each relocation.

Land of Milk & Honey is a traveling multidisciplinary arts and culture program that focuses on concepts around agriculture in the regions of California and Mexico and is presented by the MexiCali Biennial. Land of Milk and Honey will have an opening art exhibition reception on October 13, 2023, and multiple programs that will continue through December 3, 2023.

Inspired by his own culture and upbringing, Juan Carlos Ramirez-Pimienta, Spanish professor at SDSU Imperial Valley, has been recognized as a leading expert in the culture of narcocorridos, U.S.- Mexico border literacy and the impact of Mexican regional music. Ramirez-Pimienta has authored the books, “De El Periquillo al pericazo: ensayos sobre literatura y cultura mexicana” (2006); “Cantar a los narcos: voces y versos del narcocorrido” (2011) and “Una historia temprana del crimen organizado en los corridos de Ciudad Juárez” (2021).

On Saturday, Sept. 16, SDSU Imperial Valley, the Calexico Rotary Club and the Consulate of Mexico in Calexico partnered together to host its first Mariachi sin Fronteras festival in celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day. All proceeds from the event will fund scholarships for SDSU Imperial Valley and local high school students to continue their higher education journeys.

San Diego State University Imperial Valley’s new Building Bridges between the Community and Careers team will promote its STEM, nursing and public health degrees to local K-12 and high school students to launch science and health careers in Imperial Valley.

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health, set to start fall 2024, will examine environmental health issues that are prominent in Imperial Valley.
