Building Bridges
Building Bridges Graduation Initiative
SDSU is proud to launch the 5th Annual Building Bridges Graduation! This ceremony is dedicated to building bridges between the U.S.-México border by providing graduates whose immediate family members cannot cross the border to attend their SDSU commencement the opportunity to celebrate graduation with their loved ones in México. This historic ceremony was first implemented, in May 14, 2022, by the Cross-Cultural Center at SDSU Imperial Valley at Casa de la Cultura (Histórica Escuela Cuauhtémoc) en Mexicali, Baja California, México; with the support of the SDSU Office of the President, the Office of HSI Affairs, International Affairs, Associated Students of SDSU Imperial Valley, Chicanex Sin fronteras of SDSU Imperial Valley, and the SDSU IV Professional Skills Development Center.
This year the SDSU-IV Cross-Cultural Center is proud to collaborate with the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, and Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, MX to support our Building Bridges Graduating Class of 2025-2026 along the California-Baja California borderlands by hosting a graduation ceremony at UABC-Mexicali and UABC-Tijuana. SDSU prides itself on being a Hispanic Serving institution by supporting the social justice of our Transfronterizx students at the California-Baja California borderlands.
The Future of Building Bridges: A Shared Vision
The Building Bridges Ceremony is entering an exciting new chapter. To ensure the long-term growth and sustainability of this tradition, the ceremony is transitioning from a general cross-cultural event to an official SDSU Imperial Valley signature event.
While SDSU Imperial Valley now serves as the lead organizer, the partnership with the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) remains the cornerstone of this celebration. This transition reinforces our joint commitment to:
- Honoring Binational Success: Celebrating students who navigate academic life across borders.
- Strengthening Institutional Ties: Formalizing the deep-rooted collaboration between SDSU IV and UABC.
- Community Impact: Ensuring this powerful symbol of regional unity continues to thrive for years to come.
We are proud to move forward with UABC as our vital partner, building a future where education knows no borders.
